Since they broke out, together, in Good Will Hunting, besties Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have appeared in a bunch of movies together (mostly Kevin Smith movies) but despite winning the Academy Award for writing that late 90s movie about a troubled genius, his therapist, his girlfriend, and his best friends, they haven’t written a movie together since.
The Last Duel takes place in medieval France and is about a woman (Damon’s character’s wife, portrayed by Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer) who accuses her husband’s best friend of rape. Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) plays the woman, Matt Damon plays her husband, and Adam Driver plays the best friend. The woman stands by her story despite the turmoil it causes, and despite the fact that, even more so than now, people in the 14th century did not tend to believe women. Damon is ordered to fight Driver in a duel to the death, in the last legally sanctioned duel in French history. The movie is directed by Ridley Scott and was co-written by Damon, Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener.
Affleck appears in a supporting role, so it’s yet to be seen how much – if any – screentime the two friends will share, but it’s exciting that they’ve teamed up to write again, especially when it’s something so far afield from their last script. With apologies to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, this ain’t Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season. Though almost everyone involved seems to be sporting some comical haircuts and facial hair, as befit the time period.
The movie looks great, with Scott’s flair for epic visuals on full display and the 14th-century setting really coming to life, even while the themes seem particularly well-suited to our time.
